Using templates across several locations

How multi-location templates behave, and how to make one location diverge.

Who this is for: Audit Managers and Administrators.

A template saved to several locations is one template, not copies. This is the single most important thing to understand about multi-location templates.

What follows from that:

  • An edit applies everywhere. Change a clause and every location using that template gets the change.

  • Draft/Published state is shared. Publish once and it is published everywhere.

  • Times Used is aggregated across all locations.

  • Sublocations inherit their parent's templates.

Where you set them. Locations is the first panel in the builder's right-hand column, above ① Template Details. Add a location with the Add another location dropdown, or use the location-tree button beside it to pick from the full tree. Each location you add appears as a pill you can remove. The panel's helper text states what this controls: "This template appears in My Audit Templates under each of these locations."

To make one location different, you cannot simply edit it there. Instead:

  1. Open the template's ⋮ menu and choose Edit Template.

  2. In the Locations panel, remove the location you want to diverge.

  3. Publish.

  4. Use Duplicate Template to create a separate copy, and add the removed location to that copy.

  5. Edit and publish the copy independently.

If this doesn't work

  • You cannot archive a location — remove it from every template's Locations panel first.

  • An edit changed a template you did not expect — check the Location(s) column; the template is shared.
