Adding several corrective actions, and containment vs corrective

When one action is not enough.

Written by Caim Hermoso

Who this is for: Needs Manage Corrective Actions.

A finding can carry more than one corrective action. Major nonconformities usually need this — one thing rarely fixes a systemic failure.

The typical pattern uses two kinds of action:

Containment — what you do now to stop the immediate harm. Quarantine the affected stock, take the equipment out of service, put a manual check in place. Containment does not fix the cause; it buys time.

Corrective — what stops it recurring. Change the procedure, assign an owner, retrain, replace the equipment.

Both sit in the same table on the finding, each with its own reference, owner, target date and status, and they behave in exactly the same way. A progress bar shows how many of the finding's actions are done — for example 1 of 2 actions done.

The finding does not move on until every one of its actions is Completed. If verification is required for that finding type, it then goes to For Closure rather than closing — see 8.6.
