Choosing which root cause methods auditors can use

Controlling the available analysis methods.

Written by Caim Hermoso

Who this is for: Audit Administrators.

In Settings → System Settings → Audit Settings → Records & Findings, choose which of the methods are available:

  • 5 Whys

  • Fishbone (Ishikawa)

  • Fault Tree Analysis

  • Whether Skip is allowed

Method availability is evaluated live. An auditor sees the methods enabled at the moment they open the analysis, regardless of what was enabled when the finding was raised. This is different from template configuration, which is frozen per audit.

That has a practical consequence: if you disable a method, findings that already used it keep their analysis, but nobody can choose that method again — including for findings raised before the change.

Allowing Skip is a judgement call. Allowing it keeps your data honest — auditors record that no analysis was done rather than writing a token one. Disallowing it forces analysis on every finding, which is right in a regulated environment but produces some low-value entries.
